About Komodaru

What is Komodaru?

Komodaru's "komo" is like straw mat made with rice straw. We wrap this "komo" on barrels with ropes.

In Edo era, Komodaru were used to transport sake from Osaka area to Tokyo area. In order to protect the sake inside of barrels, "komo" were used and this was the beginning of Komodaru.
Later, branding or printing the sake manufacturers logos on the barrels.
Even now, all Komodaru were hand made by skilled artisans.

We have been using rice straws for "komo", however, we also use polyethylene.
Especially for the overseas customers, we use polyethylene in order to meet the regulation for the phytosanitary import.

How do you use Komodaru?
◆Komodaru for Kagamibiraki

In Japan,we often use komodaru for kagamibiraki when celebrations occur such as New Year, Grand Opening for new shop, new plant,and wedding. You could entertain your guest with Kagamibiraki, Japanese traditional way of celebration.

The barrels for Kagamibiraki are made by ceder.
You may enjoy the scent from the ceder after a few days later pouring sake in it.

Since Komodaru were made with natural materials, it is not for repeatedly use.

Please note the followings for overseas use.
 Please use Komodaru within one month of manufacturing, the inside of barrels could be dried and possibly lead to leakage. Also, leak could be occured even within one month of manufacturing due to the condition of shipping.
Please pour weather before use, 1)to clean inside of the barrel and to check if there is any leakage, 2) the barrel could expand with water. Sometimes leakage could stop by expansion of the material.
You would need large quantity of water, please check the water quality in some areas.
Please check with your import regulation before you order, you may not be able to import this product because of material.

◆Komodaru with Stainless container

It is exactly same look from the outside as Komodaru for Kagamibiraki, however, this product contains stainless container and made with polystyrene foam.
The benefit of having stainless container is repeatedly use by washing the container every time.
There will be no ceder scent from ceder for sake.
The lid would be broken or damaged after performing Kagamibiraki, please consider to purchase spare lid or place another order when it is ready to use again.
This products are sold only for overseas.

◆Decorative Komodaru

This product is designed specifically for decoration purpose only.
It is used polystyrene foam. (the small decorative komodaru has another material.)

We have variety of sizes as 60cmx60cm to 10cmx10cm.

◆Komodaru Furniture

We manufacture the table and storage boxes from Komodaru collaborating with the designers and skilled artisans.
Designs are:
・Komondaru:express Japanese four seasons with Komon pattern
・Kamondaru:used Japanese family crests.
・Kamidaru:inspired by Japanese ancient mythology

We start manufacturing these products upon receiving the order, thus the delivery could two to three months for completion.
As to Kamondaur, we added auspicious"TSURUKAME" (crane and tortoise) and many Japanese family crests as Kamon mania". Crane and Tortoise are symbol for longevity.

◆Mini Kagamibiraki Set

It is designed for performing Kagamibiraki on the table. You may enjoy this Japanese traditional way of celebrating on the table at your home or small party. As there is a plastic small container inside,
you could not only pour sake or any other drinks but also put some gifts and sweets.

What is Kagamibiraki?

There are two meanings for Kagamibiraki

First is to welcome the New Year with Kagamimochi. After the New Year, there is custom to break Kagamimochi by mallets. We considered cutting it by knife is taboo, therefore, breaking it by mallet becomes Kagamibiraki.
The Kagamimochi was believed as the gift from the God, breaking Kagamimochi and eat them means you also share the strength from the God for upcoming year.

Second is open the lid of Komodaru by mallet. The lid of Komodaru and Sake barrels are called Kagami. Opening the lid becomes Kagamibiraki.
Japanese sake made from rice is very special to Japanese. We wish good luck, health, success by offering Japanese sake to the God.

Kagamibiraki is performed to celebrate weddings, success in business with wishing best of luck.
Offering sake to everyone after Kagamibiraki is believed to bring individuals together.

What are the sizes for barrels?

There are different sizes for barrels.

What to do with small quantity of sake in large barrel?

Does Komodaru come with Sake in it?

No,Japanese sake is not included. We only manufacture barrels. The barrels you see is only containers.

Please show how to pour sake.

As the lid is already removed, it is easy to pour sake into it. Pour sake for 70% of barrel's capacity. Sake could be scattered everywhere if you pour too much.

When do you pour sake?

After setting Komodaru at the place, then pour sake into the barrel.

You may pour sake and transport Komodaru if it is done by Komoori or Normal, however, be cautious to carry it with sake contained, it could be heavy.
If the condition is Futanose, sake could be spilled during transporting barrel to the location.

The timing to pour sake could be right before Kagamibiraki, or you could pour a day or several days before the event so that you could enjoy the ceder scent with sake.
The condition is Futanose and you wish to have the ceder scent, please make sure no debris into the container.

*Sake could be scattered at Kagamibiraki, you may would like to have vinyl sheet underneath.
*Please remove any chip of wood.

Any special words or chanting at Kagamibiraki?

There is no special words at Kagamibiraki.
In Japan, we say, "YOISHO, YOISHO, YOISHO" or "ICHI, NI, SAN" (one, two, three)
You may have fun creating your own original.

After Kagamibiraki, how to offer sake to everyone?

In general, the guests are offered sake by using bamboo ladle to masu (sake cup) or glass.
In the case of large numbers of guests, you may prepare sake in masu before Kagamibiraki so that the timing of Kanpai (cheers!) will be right away.

After Kagamibiraki?

Please wash masu and/or ladle by water, they tend to be sticky after use with sake.
Komodaru is not for repeatedly use. The wood will be dried and possibly cracks after absorbing the moisture once.
You may use Komodaru for other purposes such as a stand and a flowerpot.

*The inside of barrel could be easily removed by cutting the rope.

About Masu (sake cup)

How do you use Masu?

You could pour beverages or put gifts or sweets and also use as a coaster.

Is it OK to pour warm beverages?

Not suitable for hot drinks. It could be damaged.

Do I need to pre-wash Masu before use?

It is not necessary to pre-wash before use, cypress has bactericidal action. Use wet towel to wipe inside if you wish.
As to lacquer masu, use wet towel to wipe.

Please note the followings to avoid damage to masu.
1)Wash with water for long period of time
2)Keep it in the fridge and/or use ice
3)Rapid drying caused by direct sunlight and hot air

Could I use masu repeatedly?

Yes, it is OK to use repeatedly.
However, cypress masu is not water resistant.

About Sakzuki, Ladles, Mallets

How do I use Sakazuki, ladle and mallet?
◆Sakazuki

Use for beverages and/or food
For larger Sakazuki, you could use it as cooler or you could float a candle in it for display.

◆Ladle

Use for serving sake from Komodaru after Kagamibiraki

◆Mallet

Use to break the lid of Komodaru for Kagamibiraki. Please handle with care due to the weight.

How much is shipping?

It varies for overseas, will send you a quote for shipping at the time of placing an order.
Please inform us the country name and address.

How is packing?

As to Komodaru, will have special case for overseas shipping.
Though we may use special case for other products, we will reuse and recycle them.

Returns and Exchanges

We will not accept returns and exchanges if the conditions are as below.
*Eight days after arrival of products
*In case of defacement, damage, loss and destruction of the case, instruction and other items.
*Once used by the customers.
*Damaged and/or defaced by the customers.
*Modified by the customers.
*Custome made items.

Possible to return items?

Please notify us within seven days of arrival. We will investigate and inform you.
Please note that the return shipping fee will be paid by the customers.
We will not accept any return and/or exchange once you used the items.

I would like to cancel the order.

Please send us an e-mail before making payment.
We will not be able to cancel the order with credit card payment, cash on delivery.
